We will be signing up new memberships for EACA, $10 per household per year. Our committees chairs will be present to answer questions about their organization and involvement within our community. This will be your chance to sign up and volunteer for what interests you the most.

We have gathered over $1000 in raffle prizes from local businesses.  The tickets will be sold at $1 each. We are pre-selling them at Joe’s Coffee Shop and Midway Pub until the day of the event and at the Midway during the event.  Spend $20 and get 5 tickets free! The more you buy the better your chances are to win! You have to be there to win!! Prizes will drawn throughout the night! And all proceeds will benefit EACA’s general fund to better our community.

Note also that Glennwood was once spelled with two n’s, after the family with the same name who were major players at Emory (Glenn Memorial Methodist Church)

The Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store was located at Flat Shoals and Glenwood.  The building was built not only for the grocery but also for the Masonic Hall upstairs (note the sign). RL Mathews, from one of the founding families of EA had his law offices there too (sign in window). The EA Bank was sold to Trust Company Bank of Atlanta (now SunTrust) and the building was converted. The grocery became Kroger and moved to Moreland with the Masonic Hall (Building still standing on Moreland). Note the coal powered heating system evidence on the roof line.

The A&P

The A&P building is located on Flat Shoals and most recently  housed the East Atlanta Antique market.  Renovations are underway for a new gastropub.

On Monday Janurary 16th, 25 neighbors took “a day on” rather than a day off in [...]]]> The Parks and Greenspace and Beautification committees of EACA want to extend a giant thank you to all the friends and neighbors who gave their time and energy to make Brownwood Park a more beautiful place to play.

On Monday Janurary 16th, 25 neighbors took “a day on” rather than a day off in remembrance of Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy of community service. Activities included weeding and preparing the community garden for spring planting, wood chipping the newly reconstructed path in the south side of the park and clearing trash from the banks of the stream.

EACA would also like to send an enormous thanks to Grant Central Pizza for their generous donation of pizza for the hard working volunteers.  EACA would like to give a big thanks to The City of Atlanta Parks for removing the trash so rapidly from the curb. Brownwood Park is a gem in the East Atlanta Community and keeping it beautiful is an important part of EAV quality of life.

Come join EACA’s Parks and Greenspace Committee along with your East Atlanta neighbors and friends at Brownwood Park Monday, January 16th from 10 am to 1 pm to help make the park a safer more beautiful place for all of us.

Activities will include:

• community garden clean up
• trash removal from the newly revitalized trail along the stream
• laying wood chips on the new path to the bridge

Bring work gloves. Everything else will be provided. This is a family friendly event.

In its 30^th year, the East Atlanta Community Association (EACA) has worked tirelessly to bolster the quality of life for all East Atlantans. Notably, with the IRS’s determination of EACA as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization last year, revenue topped $100,000 this year: all funds going to support various local projects. Contributions are fully tax-deductible.

In 2011, EACA continued its commitment to local seniors by coordinating and funding Branan Bingo, a monthly, volunteer-led event for residents of Branan Towers. EACA also continued its Neighbor in Need initiative, which supported 11 emergency home repairs (valued at over $14,000) for East Atlanta seniors. Local churches, neighbors and the East Atlanta Beer Festival have become regular supporters of this important work.

Other new EACA initiatives have also been busy in 2011. The Parents Network coordinated three playgroups, which brought out over 50 neighborhood families to connect with one another, while age-specific playgroups have been created for children up to five-years-old. Recycle EAV, a new EACA initiative, continued to advocate for and supply free, public recycling in the business district. Its efforts have recycled over 20 tons of glass from local bars and restaurants this year. The Arts & Culture Committee made sure that the community had publically accessible music and theater this year; an August 25^th Creative Loafing article featured EACA’s sold-out arts benefit, Snow, Glass, Apple. The play’s setting was at the neighborhood’s very own farmer’s market, which was featured in local media and even The New York Times this year. Among other things, EACA helped the market – which averaged over 750 shoppers per week – raise $30,000 for its operations.

In addition to emphasizing recycling and local, healthy food, EACA continued its efforts to improve Brownwood Park. By removing invasive plants from the park’s stream buffer last fall, EACA began restoration of the forest and stream in the south half of the park. The project continued this year, in addition to constructing trails, rebuilding a footbridge and water quality sampling. Some early 2012 plans include new steps into the park from Portland Avenue at Joseph Avenue while reconfiguring a nearby sidewalk for wheelchair accessibility.

Beyond efforts at the park, EACA continued to preserve and enhance the beauty and desirability of East Atlanta. Over 60 volunteers planted flowers and shrubs five times this year as well as held regular community clean-up days. All of last year, EACA worked to stop a wireless communications tower at 469 Metropolitan Place, and on February 18, 2011, a federal court upheld the community’s position and the city’s decision to deny construction of a tower. EACA also partnered with SAND and SouthStar CDC to successfully oppose the construction of a large gas station at Ormewood and Moreland Avenues this year.

A 30^th anniversary is a special occasion, and we celebrate our community organization for all it has accomplished over the years, all of the leaders who have stepped up to guide it and all of the neighbors who have volunteered to make a difference in such a great neighborhood.
