East Atlanta Streetscape in Construction!

East Atlanta's Streetscape finally in construction!

What is the scope of the project?
Flat Shoals Ave from Metropolitan Avenue to Stokeswood Avenue. The only exception being the inclusion of sidewalk work at the new library to match the pattern of the streetscape.

What is the Project Budget?
The construction budget is roughly $700,000.

What is the Construction Schedule?
The construction schedule is expected to be complete the middle of July.

What is being done?
In general the street is becoming more pedestrian friendly by widening the sidewalk a few feet and inserting "bulbouts" at the intersections and at the crosswalks.  In addition, there will be new trash cans and other street furniture along with the installation of classic street lighting.  Trees on the east side will be replaced with a variety that will not impede the power lines.  The road will also be resurfaced and the intersection at Glenwood and Flatshoals will be slightly reconfigured to make it somewhat easier to make a right turn.

What happens to the planter at Glenwood?
It is not planned to be impacted/altered in this phase though community/design committee may consider raising funds to do something later.

What happens to the Trees?
The new tree types are butterfly Magnolias (west side of Flat Shoals) and Chinese Elms (east side). Some older trees (oaks) will remain on the east side. Those on the west side will be removed.

What about the fire hydrants at Glenwood and Flat Shoals?
The two fire hydrants at Glenwood in front of the planter will be relocated and moved farther away from the curb. The new turn lane will also be much broader to eliminate trucks knocking the hydrant over.

What about Crosswalks?
The existing mid-block crosswalk will remain. An additional one is still under consideration.
