EACA Meeting - September, 2002

EACA Minutes, September 10, 2002

Meeting was called to order at 7:35 pm. Ken Rose, president, recognized new neighbors, first time attendees and elected officials and candidates.

Comments from Natalyn Archibong, 5th District Council Representative
The East Atlanta Closing on the property sale will be tomorrow, September 11, 2002 ** SouthStar will be officially the sole source for funds for streetscape ** Potential sites are being viewed for the new fire station. Prospects for new fire station in village looks good ** Plans for the Atlanta Gas Light property are on track. Task Force will include representative from East Atlanta. Historic first meeting of the East Atlanta Business Association and the Little Five Points Business Association was held. The impact on East Atlanta will be massive ** Sidewalks for Glenwood still in the hopper.

Fire Department Station 13
There will be a joint dedication of new apparatus for Station 13 and Station 10 on September 28 during the East Atlanta Village Strut. Smoke Detectors and car seats are now available.

Police Zone 6
Officer Black and Inspector Naylor reported on a money/key scam going on at this time.

Dekalb County Board of Health – West Nile Virus Report
Dept. will inspect individual homes for stagnant water sources ** not spraying for mosquitoes at this time ** Mosquito activity most prevalent at dusk **
Call 404-508-7900 to get larvicide. Department will send someone to spray.

EAV Strut
Pre-register for parade participation at Park Pets or register on day of parade. Activities will include an artist’s market, children’s area, community area. Atlanta Journal Constitution will have a full banner page. Possible Creative Loafing will have a full page. Volunteers are needed for all areas but particularly Children’s area, set up. Contact Katy DeMent (Strut Coordinator) or Charles Turner (Yard Sale coordinator).

City Traffic and Transportation
Mr. Katir brought literature on process for getting speed humps and answered questions.

Committee Reports

Beautification – Pam Aks
Quarterly clean up with SAND will be 9/14. Meet at Bank of America at 9:00 am
** January 18 – Trees Atlanta will be planting down Moreland Avenue. Volunteers are needed to get permission from property owners along Moreland for the tree planting. Contact Pam Aks or Brian Karpinski to volunteer. Jill Sieder offered Kid Club participation. October 5 – Hands on Atlanta Day ** Contact Dana Young to volunteer for Brownwood Park Cleanup.

Land Use & Zoning
Expansion of Church of God in Christ on Glenwood would require a variance for parking requirements. Informational meeting will be held September 15 at the church, 1550 Glenwood. Contact Dennis Madsen with comments, concerns, questions.
Vote was 28-0 to defer.

EAV Strut
Volunteers needed for booth coverage and T-shirt sales at “Strut.” Carter Smith is coordinating EACA float. Contact him for ideas concerning design, construction, walking with float in parade, etc. Membership unanimously approved $99.00 for materials.

Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL)
FEAL is sponsoring a book sale during the Strut on the front lawn of the library. Book donations are being received at the library and hardware store ** Jim Busbee facilitated resolution of the outstanding water bill for the Church on the new library site.

Kroger Advisory Board
Evelyn Bailey reported that first meeting of the board was held. Also mentioned possible occupancy of old K-Mart site by Target.

Other
Steve Carr is encouraging calls to the Mayor’s office to support full sewer separation ** Clean Water Advisory Committee meeting on 9/13.

September minutes approved with following corrections: (1) Sidewalk ordinance was passed. (2) Steve Carr would like to work with resident engineers such as Brian Karpinski and Steve Sailor for a resolution to Mr. Eugene Davis’ problem with Sugar Creek.
