EACA Minutes, April 9, 2002
Meeting called to order by president at 7:35 pm. President welcomed
Ms. Quick and Jash from Natalyn Archibong's office. He also acknowledged
NPU President, Dolly Mahone and all first time EACA attendees.
Information Items
The East Atlanta library variance (special exception) will be heard
at City Hall on April 19 at 1:00 pm. Tire Round Up Day will be April
20 thanks to funding being donated by Councilwoman Natalyn Archibong's
budget. Please be at Bank of America at 8:30 am. Condolences were
expressed to the owners of dogs poisoned in Brownwood Park.
Fire Department
Mike Simmons is the new captain at the East Atlanta fire station.
Some of his crew was also in attendance. Important items mentioned:
· Hydrant checking season - they will be greasing, flushing
and painting
· Home inspections are available; come by on any shift to
arrange
· Car seats are due soon and more smoke detectors are on
order
· Residents please share ideas for new fire station location
· Hard to see addresses. Addresses should be 4.5-6"
high and located right above door or on mailboxes
· Parking on both sides of narrow streets impedes the fire
truck
Station 13 crew wants to be more involved in the community. Some
ideas include:
· CPR training
· Fire extinguisher training
· Basic first aid, i.e., heat exhaustion
· Kitchen fires - what to do
· Other ideas welcomed from community - bring to next EACA
meeting
Residents complained about broken fire hydrants. Charles McCullough
asked for a commitment from Councilwoman Archibong's office to follow
up with repair with United Water.
Beautification- Pam Aks
Thanks to Shawn & Michael of Traders for donating 12 bushes
for the Village. Also thanks to ACE Hardware for donation and Park
Pet for assistance. Residents should encourage business owners to
take responsibility for cleaning in front of their businesses and
in back. Also owners should be responsible for watering plants in
front of their businesses. Pickup Trucks are needed for Tire Round
Up Day. Please spread the word to leave tires at curb for pick up.
The Sowers & Growers (in SAND area) plant sale and swap will
be April 20.
Police- Ruby Naylor
There were many drug arrests in Beat 606. Some instances of identity
theft were reported. Safety report from Shannon Hale has been distributed.
The painting of the precinct has been postponed.
Dolly Mahone reminder: EACA is hosting the next Zone 6 president's
meeting.
Old Business
Music Midtown - Carter Smith
Event scheduled for May 3,4,5. More volunteers are needed. There
are new rules for volunteer participation - shifts are 7 hours;
no leaving shift for roaming; t-shirts required; shuttle transportation
for volunteers from Turner Field; TIPS training required (Training
for Intervention Procedures). TIPS training for EACA residents tentatively
scheduled for 4/25 at 7:00 pm. EACA will receive 8% of all sales
plus tips.
EACA Sponsored Bike Racks
Residents in attendance voted on location of two bike racks at Fluff
& 'em Florist.
Neighborhood Charter School
Charter school registration is now open to anyone.
NPU-W
Dolly Mahone, NPU-W president, is asking for a donation for supplies
for the copier that has been given for NPU-W business. Unanimous
vote to approve donation of $200.
Village Walk - 1855 Flat Shoals
This subdivision is already under construction but city lost application.
Builders have to reestablish paper trial. Vote to approve 34-0-0.
Terrell Grayson, as an Eagle Scout project, has a proposal for
a beauty spot improvement for greenspace across from Village Walk.
EACA's vote to support the concept passed unanimously. Village Walk
wants to adopt this greenspace for permanent maintenance. Other
participants offering help include Home Depot, SunTrust, Blue Circle,
and First Iconium Church.
Traders five-year anniversary
Thank you party will be held April 13 from 7-11 pm. Shawn offered
space for EACA to set up an info table for sign ups, membership
info, etc.
Public Safety
Residents should consider setting up block watches on their street.
