EAV-O-Ween – Rick Gagnon
- 6:00 – 9:00 p.m., October 31st - for children in the community. Afterwards, local establishments will have parties, etc. for adults. There will be hayrides, face painting, bake sale, trick-or-treating, a scary movie (at Village Hardware), games for kids, and costume contests for adults, kids, and pets. EABA – Mark Takacs
- Chili cook-off being held with a $250 first prize on October 30th at the EAV Farmer’s Market
- NPU-W received many awards from Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta list with 34 of just over 300 awards
- The new EABA logo has been fully rolled out and we have stickers and t-shirts with the logo available
- Membership in EABA is the highest its been in the past 4 years with meetings on the 1st Wednesday of each month at East Atlanta Library
- New businesses in the village include Blah Blah Boutique (young children’s store)
- A Sidewalk ordinance has been proposed – EABA has taken the position that this would be detrimental to businesses of the size we have in EAV – advocates that community members get in touch with their Council Members to express their opposition
Burgess-Peterson Academy – Robin Robbins
- Eleni Yames is a student in the Gifted Program who Dr. Robbins is sponsoring to go on an APS-gifted trip to Costa Rica. She is trying to fund-raise $2,200 for this trip. Please call 404.802.7538 if you would like to contribute
- Burgess-Peterson is seeking volunteers for help with a range of activities (tutoring, administrative work, technology center, etc.) and has designed spaces for volunteers to come work within several empty classrooms. Police Report – Major Propes
- Property Crime accounts for 87% of our crime (burglary, auto larceny)
- Auto larceny is what is driving our crime (accounts for 31% of our total crime in the area) – is up city-wide (1,600 more cars have been broken into YTD over last year)
- Have locked up 42 perps this year for “Entering Auto” (those who are actively breaking-in to the car or have evidence that they were personally in the car). Of those 42, they have a combined history of 638 prior arrests. John Spurling was finally sentenced for 18 months
- There has been heightened collaboration across departments - Vice has been making prostitution arrests on Moreland, Narcotics has been out here, Red Dog locked up 35 people in Zone 6 last week.
- Major Robert Browning was introduced and is the new Night Commander for the City
Coan Middle School – Dr. Andre Williams
- Since arrival 4 years ago, have turned over 90% of the staff to build stronger staff (and required teachers be able to pass the same tests students do). Coan has outperformed Inman Middle School in all areas except 8th grade Mathematics
- Made AYP 3 years in a row – only middle school in Atlanta to do so; only middle school in the area that made all of the Superintendent’s targets
Crime Report – Jenny Murray
- Up 93 Burglaries YTD, and are up 127% vs 2007
- 1/3 of our crime is Larceny (170 Auto Larceny)
- YTD we are up 60% on crimes in our area and for September, are up 40% over SEP 2007
- Up 16 residential burglaries over SEP 2007 and up 3 commercial burglaries (+50% YTD)
- There have been 91 auto larcenies YTD and we are up 50% Pedestrian Robbery YTD (33 YTD)
- McWilliams Street has had a lot of activity recently

Public Safety – Ed Gilgor
- Advocated Strikemaster 2 strikeplate and Motion Detector lights to deter criminals from entering your home
- 880 Glenwood - Residents of Glenwood Park are now to provide public input to the external aesthetics of this new development and into the design process
- 525 Moreland Ave: There will be also be a process in this case for the community to provide input into the design process
Dekalb Memorial Dog Park - Joanie Stovall
- Scott Wandstrat has been working with DeKalb County Commissioners Johnson and Gannon among others to provide funds and support for this dog park, which is just east of I-20 off of Glenwood.
- Parkview Shopping Center on Memorial has been bought and is being re-developed. The buyers have provided funds to DeKalb Memorial that will be used for multiple improvements, one of which is to be an off-leash dog park. They are seeking a letter of support from EACA. Motion to support dog park approved, with Joanie to draft letter.
Porch Press – Henry Bryant
