Opening Comments  - Jelena Crawford

DeKalb Animal Control – Major Kathy Mooneyham
- Contact Info for Major Mooneyham - email: kjmooneyco.DeKalb.ga.us; Phone directly if a specific need or problem is not handled appropriately: 404-294-2693 -  DeKalb Animal Control has had an Animal Cruelty Division since January 2008. Have made 43 arrests, approximately 125 citations and over 200 dogs / cats rescued
-  The New DeKalb Animal Ordinance was handed out
-  Seven more animal control officers were requested in the 2009 city budget.  The budget will be determined in February by the DeKalb Board of Commissioners
-  Animal Control has jurisdiction over all of DeKalb County including inside the city limits of Atlanta within DeKalb County
-  How can you report an incident without giving your name?
An arrest cannot take place and a ticket cannot be issued without having a person to testify in the court.  If the incident is easily seen, an anonymous call can be made
-  Responses can take up to two-three days for a non-priority call. To make a report, call 404-294-2996
-  Only 1 officer in charge of traps - Officer Vicky Hall
Traps must be requested; requesting party is responsible for monitoring the trap and calling Animal Control to remove animal.  If requesting party cannot monitor a trap, then Animal Control must be notified to monitor the placed trap

Crime report - Jenny Murray
-  There was a significant decline in crime in 2006, crime rose again in 2007, Crime is up 40% in 2008 from 2007
-  Crime is up 92% in a 4 year period
-  December overall crime is up 44% from December last year
-  Auto larceny, burglary are the top categories of crime for 2008
-  Can find crime details on the EACA website with maps
-  Assaults are not a large portion of the crime in East Atlanta (down 14% from 2007)
-  Burglary up 84% in 2008 from 2007
-  Auto larceny up 106% from 2007
-  Auto thefts down 24% from 2007
-  44 Pedestrian Robberies in 2008 (up 63% from 2007)

Police Report - Sergeant Schimmel
-  Restaurant Shooting at the Standard on Memorial
  Working with Homicide on leads; Zone 6 working on past crimes and weapons that could lead to
an arrest
-  Nathanial Thompson-Stallings resident
Caught during a crime in progress by DeKalb County Police; in jail and has admitted to 21 crimes in the area
-  Increase in burglaries during evening hours when lights are off and homeowners have just arrived home. Recommendation to turn lights on in the early evening hours

Crime Stoppers  – Sergeant Quintana-Green
-  Crime Stoppers-Non-profit program brought to Atlanta by the Atlanta Police Foundation. Tips go to Crime Stoppers and remain anonymous. Can receive up to $2,000 reward when suspect is caught and convicted (reward amounts are typically $2,000 – sometimes they increase). Call 404-577-TIPS to report a tip
-  Toasting for Tips is a Crime Stoppers fundraising program
E-mail Stephanie Guthrie (sguthrieatlantapolicefoundation.org) at Crime Stoppers to set up a fundraising party or for more information -  Georgia Restaurant Association is organizing a Dine Out event –Wednesday January 28, 2009 to benefit the reward fund for John Henderson. Public Safety – Myron Polster
-  Write down all serial numbers to your electronics in case of robbery so that the police may be able to return those items to you. Police cannot return your property without this proof
-  Large number of evening burglaries
-  Stokeswood, Milton Place have been hit hard in past few weeks
-  This committee will be focusing on code enforcement this year
-  Foot beats will no longer exist as of January 22, 2009
-  East Atlanta Safety Patrol meeting January 27, 2009 at Brannan Towers at 7:00 p.m.

Council Member Report – Natalyn Archibong
-  City is facing dire straits financially; looking to have full capacity personnel by July 2009, especially in public safety
-  Recycling every other week and happens on Wednesdays - pick ups January 14th, 28th, February 11th, 25th,etc; Yard Rubbish pick-up is on the alternate weeks, every two weeks
-  Residents brought up problems with MARTA speeding through the area – follow-up information to be gathered and sent to Councilmember Archibong
-  Residents discussed mini-motorized bikes creating traffic issues and noise particularly in Clifton Rd/Jobeth Ave area.

Firestation Report – Captain Franklin
-  New station heading toward completion in April 2009 and will be located at the corner of Metropolitan Ave and Flat Shoals Road
-  This station offers car seats, will take your blood pressure and is a paramedic station
-  Will have sleeping quarters, kitchen, but no refrigerator; Seeking monetary donations for furniture and appliances; Call Atlanta Firefighter’s Foundation to donate 404-853-7000

East Atlanta Business Association Report – Marc Takacs
-  Working toward getting an EAV sign on I-20
-  Trying to grow organization, doubled members from 2007 to 2008
-  Working on a partnership with Good Samaritan House to clean up the commercial district
-  Introductions of  local EABA businesses represented – Larsen & Teusink, Rick Gagnon (My
-  Coach), The Graveyard, Callie Nix (Origins Realty), Lea Johnston (Lanier Real Estate Brokerage), Marc Takacs (Keller Williams), Melissa Wakamo (Red Robin Group)

Membership – Austin Dickson
-  December Meeting Minutes approved
-  $10 to join EACA. Acceptable payment methods include cash check or Paypal via the website
-  Member card provides benefits/discounts to area businesses
-  Contact Austin via the EACA website or at a meeting for EACA yard signs
-  $10 Gift Certificates to Holy Taco Distributed to area residents that have resided in our - community the longest, the newest newcomer and the most recent birthday

Beautification – Jelena Crawford
-  Cigarette bins being installed in the village within the next two weeks
- Sign-up for Beautification committee and notifications by e-mailing beautificationeaca.net

Land Use and Zoning – Andrew Walter
-  Andrew Walter and Ted Hitch – Co-chairs
-  No applicants this month
-  525 Moreland - Proposal for a mixed ground floor residential/commercial – a meeting organized by area residents is on January 15th at 6:00 p.m. at 1127 Glenwood Avenue

NPU-W – Ed Gilgor
-  This committee handles liquor licenses, grants
-  Larry Johnson – 404-371-2988 -DeKalb County Commissioner - Call him to address concerns with salaries of our city personnel and current budget cuts
-  Arborist is coming out to the next NPU-W meeting to discuss enforcement issues

Friends of the East Atlanta Library – Henry Bryant
-  Feb 1, 2009 proposed library clean up day
-  Feb 19, 2009 the mansion on East Lake Drive is hosting a party for Friends of Atlanta Libraries

Burgess Peterson Academy – Coach Jackson
-  Gym is open to area residents during the Presidential inauguration to watch with the children
-  Setting up garden for the first and second graders to learn about eating healthy
