April 8, 2008 EACA Meeting

Opening Comments - Myron Polster
•  EAV Farmer’s Market begins Thursday, May 1 from 4:00 pm until dark in the ACE Hardware Parking Lot (new location).
•  Check EACA newsletter for updates on the possible change in homestead exemptions, which may increase to $30,000 over three years if Governor Perdue signs the new legislation.
•  Check www.eaca.net for new EACA discounts
•  Thanks to Larry Johnson, Natalyn Archibong, Robbin Shipp, Pastor Dave and many others for all the help after the tornado.

East Atlanta Strut - Mary Yetter
The East Atlanta Strut 2008 will be held Saturday, September 20th.  Go to www.eastatlantastrut.com to volunteer or for sponsorship information, and for parade, vendor and grant applications.

EABA – Myron Polster reporting for Marc Takacs
•  EABA is working on a marketing plan.
•  New businesses coming to East Atlanta Village include The Midway Restaurant as well as a bakery.

Dance 411 Studios - Toni King
The studio has been in our community for six years and is now featuring Kids programs and kids camp fitness. Learn more at www.dance411studios.com.

West End Tour of Homes - John Pavlin
West End Neighborhood is having their Tour of Homes weekend May 2-4.  A Jazz Concert featuring Theresa Hightower kicks off the weekend at the Wren’s Nest.  See www.atlantawestend.com for more information.

Historic Home Workshop - Jennifer Murray
A preservation workshop (designed for those repairing historic homes in the aftermath of the tornado but open to everyone) will be held Saturday, April 12 from 10:00 – 12:00 noon in the Grant Park Zoo Auditorium.  The workshop features local and nationally renowned preservationists.  This is timely topic as tax credits for those renovating historic properties have just increased.

Crime Report - Jennifer Murray
Burglaries, Larceny from Auto, and “Larceny Other” crimes are up in comparison to last month.  See the detailed crime maps in the EACA newsletter for more information.

Member Issues - Myron Polster
•  March Minutes – approved by unanimous voice vote.
•  Need replacement for EACA Secretary – two residents have volunteered.
•  EACA Grant Process – There will be two rounds of grants this year, giving out a total of $1,000 per round.  The deadline for the first round of submissions is June 20th.  If interested in applying, see www.eaca.net for an application.

Beltline Bicycle Tour - Ruth Underwood
A bike tour of the proposed beltline will be conducted Sunday, April 20,  sponsored by the Atlanta Bicycle Campaign.  Appropriate for cyclists of all levels (www.atlantabike.org).

B*ATL (Battle of Atlanta) - Glen Satell
The 5th annual B*ATL is coming up Saturday July 19th and will feature more living history civilian life as well as a segment titled “From the Civil War to Civil Rights.” Looking for all types of volunteers. Email glensatellyahoo.com if you wish to help.

Police Report - Major Propes
•  Burglaries are up this month.  April Clark recently out but was arrested again – she is a major problem in our area.  To help keep her locked up, work with Ed via Courtwatch.
•  Larcenies from autos are also up this month with a rash of aftermarket stereo thefts.
•  A narcotics unit has been active in our neighborhood lately trying to break up some problem areas.
•  Write down all your serial #s to help identify things recovered from suspects.

Legislative Report – Representative Robbin Shipp
•  Reported on her first session as our representative
•  Commended the neighborhood on its’ response to the tornado with many volunteers helping out

Earth Day - Mellissa Dobraski
Earth Day workday in East Atlanta will be held Saturday April 26. Volunteers are needed to pick up garbage in village, do weeding, etc (bring own hand tools). Meet Mellissa in Village or Joanie at the Brownwood Park Rec Center at 9:30 am to help. There will be a sign up sheet for the tire round up at Joe’s. Farmer’s Market – Jonathan Tescher
The weekly East Atlanta Farmer’s Market will begin Thursday, May 1 from 4:00 pm to dusk at its new location (Ace Hardware on Glenwood).  The market features produce, locally raised meat, artisan cheeses, bread, crafts, and more.  New this year - food stamps will be accepted.  Learn more at www.Farmeav.com.

Land Use and Zoning - Andrew Walter
Trees Atlanta - Susan Pierce can do a tree replanting to replace some of the trees that came down in the storm as part of the “Neighborwoods” program, which uses mostly native trees and shade trees to add back to the city’s tree canopy. Email Susan at susantreesatlanta.org or Andrew at landuseeaca.net if you want to be part of the organizational team in East Atlanta.

Moreland LCI Grant – Myron Polster
The Moreland Avenue LCI plan will be voted on at the next NPU meeting (April 23, 7:30 pm,  Martha Brown). LCI plan can be viewed on EACA website or at the East Atlanta Public Library.
Took a vote of EACA members to gauge support, which was 17-0 in favor of the plan.

East Atlanta Beer Festival - Ed Gilgor
This year’s Beer Festival will be held Saturday May 31.  Go to www.eabfonline.org to buy tickets or volunteer, which earns you free entrance.  The proceeds are used for grants to the community (last year $5,000 went to Burgess-Peterson Academy playground project).

Public Safety - Ed Gilgor
•  Fire Station construction is getting underway, and should take nine to ten months.
• Ed is going to ramp up Courtwatch and needs a group coordinator and volunteers to receive and distribute info about the cases, write letters, and attend hearings and trails. Contact him at edward.gilgorgmail.com

•      Code Enforcement send photographs of problem properties to Ed.  Include date of photo, property address, and type of violation along with your name, address, and phone.
•  Paradise Living (606 Flat Shoals) – they’ve compiled the concerns of neighbors and will be working with the facility operators to correct these concerns.
•  Ed still investigating Fulton County EMS service issues, as county will stop supporting the service on June 30th.
