EACA Minutes, July 9, 2002

Vice President, Karen Haynes, called meeting to order. Introduction of new neighbors and recognition of political candidates present, followed by announcement that MARTA will give a presentation next month regarding the I-20 corridor study and expansion on the east side. Minutes were read and approved and the treasurer’s report was given.

Fire Department
Fire Station 13 is still soliciting suggestions of land for a new fire station.


Police – Zone 6
Major Banda reported that a recent burglary suspect had been apprehended. Detective Favors enthusiastically reported the apprehension of a burglary ring in the Paoli/Winfield area. Tip to attendees: be sure to write down serial numbers on property so property can be easily identified and returned to owners.

City Council, District 5
Natalyn Archibong reported that the new Police Chief is on board and may have an opportunity to come to an EACA meeting ** Brownwood Park will be cut every couple of months ** As of June 19, the library land swap was authorized by the cit and papers were signed ** $950,000 available for streetscape project with SouthStar as sole source for handling project ** CDBG application has been submitted for sidewalks on Glenwood from Flat Shoals to I-20. The process is underway and moving forward.

Friends of East Atlanta Library (FEAL) Fundraising
Shannon Hale is spearheading fundraising for FEAL. Current project is cake auction to take place at every EACA meeting. David Kent brought first cake for auction tonight. Funds to be used for a variety of things such as sponsoring book signings, book readings and other events/activities to support the local library.

Beautification
Chair Pam Aks cancelled the July clean up but committee and volunteers will reassemble and regroup in August on Saturday following the EACA meeting. Steve Carr offered the use of his wood chipper to those who volunteer for this effort.

Porch Press
Henry Bryant advised that the Porch Press should be delivered by the 15th of each month. If not, call Genie Strickland. Paste Up is the first Monday of each month at 7:30 pm at Adams Realty on the corner of Cherokee and Glenwood. Proofreaders are needed and it’s only a 1.5 hour commitment.

Environment/Transportation
Steve Carr, NPU-W environmental chair and APAB Transportation chair, is having a meeting at Good News Café on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. All are welcomed. He also advised that sewer rates will increase by about $100. Time to cut back on water usage now. Still seeking topographically challenged property (greenspace). Scott Peterson will come before EACA next month and will bring photos of Constitution Lakes at the south end of East Atlanta.

SouthStar
Fifteen home repairs completed for unincorporated Dekalb. Search is underway for funding to continue this program. Repairs for city of Atlanta should be starting again soon. SouthStar is accepting applications for any neighbor in need of HVAC, roofing, plumbing, electrical up to $5,000 for senior or disabled homeowners. The IDA program is going strong – first couple of participants ready to graduate and buy homes. Negotiations ongoing with the city on the bond work for the village. Southstar is looking for an Executive Director – interviews underway. Hoping to have an installation event for the bike racks received.
