EACA Minutes, August 13, 2002
Presidents information items: New trash cans (soliciting suggestions
for locations of new trash cans contact Pam Aks; speed hump
presentation next month. President also recognized elected officials
and candidates.
Comments from Natalyn Archibong, 5th District Council Representative
City is soliciting lobbyists for sewer problems. City is seeking
to get 50,000 signatures in support of the need of Federal dollars
to help rectify the sewer problem. August 29 is the deadline. **
Natalia Holton, former EACA president, is now on Natalyns
staff and Will Bryant, East Atlanta resident, is an intern. Upcoming
council involvement include a retreat where items to be discussed
will be the citys relationship with the school system and
the legislative agenda. The 800,000 sq. ft. Atlanta Gas Light property
on Moreland Avenue near Little Five Points will be sold. Desirable
mix for new development will be a mix of residential and commercial,
at least half residential. Rezoning is possible.
Comments from Joanne McClinton, State Rep. 59th District/Post 1
Grady Hospital was not funded by Dekalb County this year.
Candidates
Introduction of and comments made by Howard Mosby (running for State
Rep 59 dist/Post 1), and Joe Bembry and Larry Johnson (running for
Dekalb Co. Comm, 3rd District); Leane Levitan (running for State
senate).
Minutes
July minutes and treasurers report approved.
Fire Department
Maintenance continues. Responded to 175 calls ** 2 hydrants out
of service ** Fall tour inspections begin in September ** Problem
with addresses not being seen at night ** Problem persists with
some streets being inaccessible at night because of parking on both
sides of street: May Avenue between Blake & Flat Shoals; Newton
Avenue between Blake & Flat Shoals; Piper Circle; Oak Grove
between Flat Shoals & Haas; Patterson between McPherson &
dead end; Eastside between Glenwood & dead end; Marbut between
McPherson & dead end; Blake between Glenwood & Marbut; Newton
between Stokeswood & Flat Shoals. To enable access, one side
of street will have to be closed to parking. Station is asking EACA
to write a letter in support of the inequity of money being put
into the Firemens pension fund. Funds need to be retroactive
for past years at 3% instead of 2% (Police Department is at 3%)
** Apparatus dedication is scheduled for September 28 (during the
Strut).
Committee Reports
Beautification
City ordinance being passed to make it unlawful to park on sidewalk
** need suggestions for new trash can locations ** clean up this
Saturday in East Atlanta Village.
East Atlanta Strut
Suggestions solicited for EACA fundraising at Strut with no more
than a $150 investment (approved by body 30-0-0). The EARL parking
lot will be additional areas for rent during the Strut.
10x10 spaces will be $25.00.
Other
$500.00 donation to Strut unanimously approved.
Scott Peterson gave a brief presentation on the prison farm property
south of East Atlanta. The city owns the property. Scott would like
a letter of support from EACA to the mayor and the Dekalb CEO supporting
selling part of the property to make way for a public/private venture
to revitalize and renew this area.
MARTA presentation (Ted Williams, PEQ Consultants). The federal
government wants to be sure community is in agreement. EACA president
suggest we could respond in either of several ways: (1) no service
(2) service down I-20 and up Glenwood (3) service down I-20 and
connecting further out (4) no consensus money spent elsewhere
(north side)
It was suggested we write a letter of support for service that benefits
East Atlanta.
Website Earl Daniels gave information on new or proposed
site that will cost $154.00 for a year but will enable site to be
updated by any one of the Executive Board. The approval was unanimous.
