Feburary 2002 Minutes

EACA Meeting, 2/12/02 – called to order at 7:40 pm. By the vice president, Karen Haynes, who gave the welcome and new neighbor recognition.

Minutes from January meeting were read and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report – Marguarite Murray presented a copy of the revised treasurer’s report with actual ending balance for 2001 of $3634.04. At present we still have two accounts. However $3300 was transferred from SunTrust to Bank of America with a January balance of $3361. Current balance: $3031.00 in Bank of America, $302.43 in SunTrust for a total of $3333.43. Payment of expenses for monthly recurring items approved by majority. Treasurer’s report accepted.

Police Report – Lt. Zuno, watch commander, Zone 6 said car break-ins and pedestrian robberies are still a problem. However, crime in the zone was down 11-12% from last year. He spoke on car theft preventive measures and answered questions.

Old Business

Southstar– Earl Daniels updated the bike rack sponsorship program and answered questions. Southstar presented details of sponsorship to EABA at their last meeting. EABA expressed concern that some bike racks would be orphaned when Streetscape is in place (if 20 racks are used). Earl reiterated that Southstar will not force racks on anyone.

EABA voted to support this project. Comment made that 20 seemed a lot of racks for EAV. Pesently Southstar only has funding for three racks. Earl brought drawings of some entries for bike racks EACA voted 31-6-9 to sponsor one bike ract @ $700.00.

It was also suggested that in placing racks, Southstar should keep wheelchair access in mind.

Tony Rutherford spoke briefly on a fundraiser hosted by Southstar to take place on March 3, 2002, from 2-6 pm at the Fountainhead for a $10.00 donation.

Friends of East Atlanta Library – Henry Bryant

Library Board voted to support the property at Flat Shoals and McPherson as the site of the new library (includes Laundromat and church next door). Stipulation is that the current library site would beused for 4 retail businesses. No parking variance is needed. Vote may come before EACA next month. Henry also mentioned that a move is underway to reduce the number of members on the library board which would take away our representative from Atlanta/Dekalb.

Williams Brothers – Brian Karpinski

Developers proposing a mixed use which would possibly include an elementary school and increased greenspace. Developer will be at the next EACA meeting. Plans will be available for viewing on Feb. 28, 7:30 pm at Ormewood Presbyterian Church.

EACA Priorities – The vice president gave an overview of the priorities that were posted around the room and asked that at the end of the meeting each attendee/member should review them, talk about them offer alternatives/additions and sign up to serve.

New Business

Neighborhood Charter School – Julie Fishman, parent/board member, passed out flyers with information on the charter school registration. School will have grades K-3, adding grades in subsequent years up to 5th grade. School has partnered with ZooAtlanta and will have an ecological focus incorporated into their curriculum. Primary Attendance Zone registration is Feb 9-12. Secondary Attendance Zone (East Atlanta and parts of SAND) registration is March 23, 29 and 31.

Trees Atlanta Donation – About 40 trees were planted in Brownwood Park and about 8 planted in East Atlanta Village. EACA voted by majority to donate $350 to Trees Atlanta this year.

Regular Reports/Committee Reports

SouthStar – Streetscape: EABA approved SouthStar to manage funds for the streetscape in East Atlanta Village. Input will be solicited.

Beautification – Pam Aks thanked those who participated in the January clean up. 36 bags of trash were collected. Next clean up is Saturday, February 16, 2002. Meet at Bank of America parking lot with gloves.

Land Use & Zoning – Dennis Madsen. Application has been submitted for liquor license at 467 Flat Shoals Avenue for sale of wine and beer.. Business will be a Thai restaurant. Owner/operator was present and asked for assistance from anyone with a flair for decorating.

Special Events – Sign up for Music Midtown.

Membership – Brett Aks – Membership Committee will have a brainstorming session at his house on Wednesday, February 20 at 7:30 pm.

Membership was again encouraged to peruse EACA priorities, list additional ones and sign up to participate.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 pm.
